About Company

Agriterra is an international non-profit organization specializing in cooperative development, with a significant presence in Rwanda since 2016. Its mission is to strengthen farmer organizations (FOs) and cooperatives by enhancing their business operations, financial sustainability, and market access. Agriterra collaborates with various stakeholders, including the Rwandan government, local cooperatives, and international partners, to drive agricultural transformation.

Key Programs and Initiatives in Rwanda

  1. Farmer-Focused Transformation (FFT): This flagship program supports 30 farmer organizations across key value chains such as potatoes, maize, dairy, and coffee. In 2023, FFT emphasized sustainable services and policy advocacy to complement its focus on farmer-led businesses. Notably, 14 potato cooperatives received support to enhance seed multiplication and improve yields .

  2. HortInvest Project: As part of a consortium led by SNV and funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Agriterra contributes to strengthening Rwanda’s horticultural value chains. The project aims to increase farmers’ incomes and improve food and nutrition security by focusing on fruits and vegetables for various markets .

  3. Sustainable Development Goals Partnership (SDGP): This initiative aims to enhance the maize value chain by reducing post-harvest losses, eliminating aflatoxin contamination, and improving market access for maize cooperatives. Agriterra collaborates with partners like Africa Improved Foods and the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture to implement this project .

Empowering Women and Youth

Agriterra places a strong emphasis on inclusivity by empowering women and youth within cooperatives. For instance, in 2023, the COAMANYA cooperative in Nyanza District established a women’s council and a female savings group named Abishyizehamwe-Kagarama. This group focuses on enhancing women’s leadership and financial literacy, with support from both Agriterra and the Nyanza District authorities .

Supporting People with Disabilities

The Dukomezubuzima Cooperative in Musanze District exemplifies Agriterra’s commitment to inclusivity. Comprising 320 members, including 220 individuals with disabilities, the cooperative has significantly improved its agricultural practices and productivity through Agriterra’s training and support. Members have diversified their income sources and engaged in various community services, showcasing resilience and determination .

Engagement and Recognition

Agriterra actively participates in national events to promote cooperative development. In October 2024, it contributed to the 101st International Day of Cooperatives in Musanze District, showcasing projects like FFT and “Acting Now.” These initiatives highlight Agriterra’s role in enhancing agricultural value chains and supporting sustainable practices among Rwandan cooperatives .
