About Company

Interpeace, an international peacebuilding organization headquartered in Geneva, has been actively engaged in Rwanda since the early 2000s. In collaboration with local partners, including the Institute of Research and Dialogue for Peace (IRDP), Interpeace implements a comprehensive societal healing program aimed at fostering a peaceful, resilient, and inclusive Rwandan society.

Core Pillars of Interpeace’s Work in Rwanda

  1. Mental Health and Psychosocial Support
Recognizing the enduring trauma from the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Interpeace has introduced group-based interventions such as Resilience-Oriented Therapy and Sociotherapy. These approaches are designed to be culturally sensitive and scalable, addressing issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Implemented in partnership with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) and the Ministry of Health, these therapies are facilitated by trained professionals in community settings, making mental health services more accessible .

  2. Social Cohesion and Reconciliation
Interpeace facilitates community-based healing spaces that bring together genocide survivors, former perpetrators, and their descendants. Through structured dialogues and group therapies, these initiatives aim to rebuild trust, promote forgiveness, and foster reconciliation. The organization also engages the Rwandan diaspora in dialogue processes to ensure inclusive peacebuilding efforts .

  3. Collaborative Livelihoods
Economic resilience is integral to sustainable peace. Interpeace supports income-generating activities and cooperative ventures that encourage collaboration among community members. These initiatives not only improve livelihoods but also serve as platforms for social interaction and cohesion .

  4. Prisoner Rehabilitation and Reintegration
With the anticipated release of over 20,000 genocide-related prisoners, Interpeace has developed rehabilitation curricula focusing on psychological healing, positive masculinity, and parenting skills. These programs aim to facilitate the reintegration of former prisoners into society, mitigating potential tensions and promoting community harmony .

Community Engagement and Impact

Interpeace’s approach is characterized by its inclusivity and community-driven methodologies. In 2024, the organization engaged 7,758 individuals across Rwanda, with a significant representation of women and youth. By training local facilitators and collaborating with organizations like Prison Fellowship Rwanda, DIDE, and HAGURUKA, Interpeace ensures that its programs are rooted in the communities they serve .

Research and Policy Influence

Interpeace conducts participatory research to inform its interventions and influence national policies. For instance, the Community Resilience Assessment Framework (CRAF) study, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE), evaluated resilience across various societal levels, providing insights to guide future peacebuilding strategies .
