ASA International (Rwanda) Plc (ASA Rwanda) is a for-profit, non-deposit-taking microfinance institution established in 2014 and commenced operations in 2016. It is a subsidiary of ASA International Group Plc, one of the world’s largest international microfinance institutions, listed on the London Stock Exchange and operating in 13 countries across Asia and Africa

Operations and Reach

As of the latest data, ASA Rwanda operates 37 branches across Rwanda’s five regions:

  • Eastern Province: 9 branches

  • Kigali: 7 branches

  • Northern Province: 4 branches

  • Southern Province: 8 branches

  • Western Province: 9 branches .

The institution serves over 23,000 clients, with a significant focus on women entrepreneurs, who constitute more than 95% of its clientele .

Financial Products

ASA Rwanda offers two main loan products:

  1. Small Loans: Designed for individual entrepreneurs to start or expand income-generating activities.

  2. Small Business Loans: Targeted at small enterprises requiring larger capital.

The lending approach is based on individual lending via client groups, without joint liability. Group members are responsible for non-financial obligations, such as screening or selecting potential new clients. The social cohesion within the groups fosters financial discipline by encouraging timely loan repayments .

Interest Rates and Fees

Interest rates vary depending on the loan type and term:

  • Small Loans:

    • 4 months: 3% per month

    • 6 months: 2.5% per month

    • 12 months: 2.16% per month

  • Small Business Loans:

    • 4 months: 3% per month

    • 6 months: 2.5% per month

    • 12 months: 2% per month

Additional charges include a 3% upfront loan processing fee. Cash security requirements are 5% for the first cycle and 10% from the second cycle onwards for small loans, and 10% for all cycles for small business loans .
