Water For People’s Work in Rwanda
Since establishing their office in Kigali in 2008, Water For People has partnered with local governments and communities to implement WASH programs. Their initiatives include:
-
District-Wide Approach: Collaborating with districts like Kicukiro, Rulindo, Gicumbi, Karongi, and Gisagara to develop comprehensive water and sanitation services.
-
Infrastructure Development: Promoting piped water systems and supporting the construction of sanitation facilities in schools and communities.
-
Capacity Building: Training local staff and water system operators to manage and maintain infrastructure effectively.
-
Market-Based Sanitation: Investing in local businesses to provide sanitation solutions, including pit emptying services and waste treatment plants.
-
Hygiene Promotion: Establishing hygiene clubs and promoting practices like handwashing to improve community health.
Additionally, under the USAID-funded Isoko y’Ubuzima Project, Water For People supports ten more districts, aiming to enhance institutional capacity and service delivery in the WASH sector.
